Garden Log 2-04-06
It’s been an extremely wet and dreary weekend here in Central Pennsylvania. I haven’t ventured out to the garden in a couple of weeks but I’m starting to imagine an early end of winter.
No, it doesn’t have anything to do with Groundhog Day or Punxsutawney Phil who lives just a couple of hours away in Northwest PA.
I’m just anxious to start planting a few heirloom vegetable seeds, and the unusually mild temperatures here seem to be saying that spring and a new gardening season could be less than six weeks away.
Maybe I’m not being overly optimistic to dream about an early end of winter this year; regardless of what anyone says about what the groundhog saw earlier this week.
Melissa, a gardening pal in Austin, Texas sent an email yesterday and mentioned that she has already started growing her tomato seedlings. I’m just beginning to gather my seed starting supplies together and it will be a couple more weeks before I actually start planting seeds indoors.
Emerald Globe Artichokes, Redventure Celery, Blue Solaise Leeks, and Rossa di Milano Onions will be the first seeds that I get off to an early start later this month. I’ll keep you posted and share some vegetable seed starting ideas as spring approaches… and hopefully quickly!
